A simple search for "16 month plan" will return thousands of hits on Sen. Obamas plan to withdraw American forces in 16 months after his winning the Presidency. His plan has gotten increasingly more press during his trip overseas. In many reports the Iraqi government is in agreement of his proposal. All of this leads credence to his plan, but it is easy to reach to the sky when you are standing on the shoulders of giants.
This is were the "fuzzy math" gets to me. The Senator from Illinois first mentioned his plan in January 2007, 40 months from the May 2010 withdraw date (estimated). I could say a lot about anything if I had 3+ years to make it happen (or hope someone else does it for me). If he wins the election, his withdraw plan is 18 months away, by January, 16 months away. Although Tariq al-Hashemi (Iraqi Vice-President) said he would be happy with a December 2010 withdraw. Okay..I lost count...how many months away are we now?
My point is that the media, liberals, fringe groups, are all impressed and behind the Senator Obama's plan to remove US troops. However none of them will give credit to those who walked before them, made the tough decisions, and ultimately allowed the possibility to exist that we could reasonably remove our troops by a time frame that coincides with a Senators quest for the White House.
Of course the Senator did state that some troops will remain in other capacities....
